GARDENING HOLIDAY

I last took a break from this monthly posting almost a decade ago. This month I will be doing so again. My plate is full. I need the pause and to reassess. In place of my absent fresh message, I recommend you read or reread one or two of my previous posts. Permit me to suggest PHYTOFASCISM (Apr, 2023) and/or an appropriate title. Also enjoy the spring and consider doing something special, something different in your garden.

Before I take off, the idea of a serious gardening celebration is one that I find intriguing. Yes, a few holidays have a subordinate plant or gardening component, but nothing like the end of season harvest activities of yonder years. The closest we get is Arbor Day (last Fri in April) and to a lesser degree several others. There is a National Gardening Day on the books (April 14), but I don't remember ever knowing about it. I would recommend this celebration not be a day off, rather a week of thanks because without plants and plant people there would be no people. A recurring consideration of our true place in the natural world. The only reality. For that reason I suggest we use Thanksgiving and change the week of celebration to the first week in November rather than the third. As I former classroom teacher I hated having Thanksgiving and Christmas so close. Further, with Turkey Day two weeks earlier it would make it more a mid to late fall rather than an early winter break, thus more chance for outdoor activities, more plants. Or something during the rebirth, spring. ENJOY

Enjoy your time off. I know my time will be filled with the joys of physical therapy, garden therapy and work. Have lots to do to get ready for the IHS garden tour on June 20th. Really wish my grandchild was closer to enlist as my garden helper and teach her the joys of "playing" in the dirt.
